Pulmonary Rehab
Methodist Rehabilitation Hospital provides pulmonary rehabilitation services forĀ Dallas County and surroundingĀ area residents to maximize functional independence, improve the quality of life, and manage both their medical and psychological needs.
The pulmonary rehabilitation team, under the direction of a psychiatrist who coordinates the rehab program and communicates progress or variances with referring physicians, also includes a pulmonologist, occupational therapists, physical therapists, a respiratory therapist, a dietician, and pulmonary nurses. There is also a case manager who assists with discharge planning, coordinates insurance information, arranges equipment needs, and communicates with patient and family regarding progress and goals.
Our pulmonary rehab program is designed to help patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) control symptoms and improve activities of daily life. This is achieved through targeted exercise training and behavioral and educational programs, with the ultimate goal being to help the patient restore their ability to function independently.
The program is especially effective for patients recovering from an acute episode, those with lung disorders who need conditioning to prepare for surgery, and anyone with moderate to severe breathing problems or whose activities are limited by chronic lung disease and shortness of breath. Upon successful completion of pulmonary rehabilitation, combined with an effective home-rehab program, patients can expect to enjoy:
- Decreased shortness of breath
- Better quality of life
- Fewer hospitalizations
- Decreased respiratory symptoms
- Improved physical conditioning
- Better self-management and control of daily functions
|
- Improved emotional outlook
